I will read a book from any genre, any period, of any length. It can have well-defined characters or only vague sketches; they can be likable or despicable; with clear or with muddled motivations; it can have a complex plot or a simple one.

The only element that is a must-have for me is that the author appears to be absolutely in love with words and with language. That they have spent time here and there to seek the exactly perfect turn of phrase to describe something, maybe even something that ‘defies’ description, or might seem too trivial or ephemeral to be worthy of description. The words need to sweat.

By the way, this isn’t r/suggestmeabook so feel free to share author recommendations anyway, or tell me what YOU look for in a book, or do whatever you like.
