My seven year old son loooves the Captain Underpants books, and we like that they have illustrations to go along with the chapters so it’s a nice bridge between picture books and readalouds that are just text. However, I think we’ve read all of them (and a decent number of the Dog Man comics by the same author) and I’m also getting very tired of Captain Underpants. Are there other similar series he might like?

The Investigators by John Patrick Green are pretty fun, and it’s a similar art style too.
The Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey
Catstronauts by Drew Brockington
Max Meow by John Gallagher
Hope this helps!
Diary of a Wimpy Kid series
He might like the Who Would Win series.
Anything by Tom Angleberger is funny and good (Inspector Flytrap, Origami Yoda)—some pictures but not graphic novels. My kid was into funny and transitioned well into gripping and suspenseful from age 5-7 to 8+. Here are series that might help him bridge from funny and graphic to more independent reading without as many images.
Eerie Elementary
Wild Robot (really good)
The 13-Story Treehouse
Real Pigeons Fight Crime
How to Train Your Dragon
Miss Daisy Is Crazy
Stick Dog
Dragonbreath
Bad Kitty
The Chicken Squad (on the easier side)
Rabbit and Bear (on the easier side)
