My son & I have gotten into the habit of listening to audiobooks as I drive him to & from class. He's 16, but an old soul who loves stories of tragedy. I'm looking for a mix of classics & modern books we can listen to together before we get him a car next year.
He's a history buff, Star Wars fan, & super focused on becoming a man, so coming of age stories are welcomed.
Thanks for your help!

Here are a couple of “old soul” classics: 3 Men in a Boat (humor); The Thirty-Nine Steps (intrigue); A Wizard of Earthsea (fantasy); Hatchet (survival).
I wonder if Hemingway’s ‘Old Man and the Sea’ would capture his interest?
And Mark Twain’s Pudd’nhead Wilson?
Stoner by John Williams
When I was a teenaged nerd and history buff I was really into war novels. *Storm of Steel* as a memoir, *For Whom the Bell Tolls* as historical fiction, *Black Company* for fantasy, *Forever War* for sci fi. Much graphic violence, heroics, and tragedy throughout. I guarantee he will love them but he might not want to listen with his mom, lol, in which case theyd be good gifts.
If you want something lighter and pulpier he’d probably like the Expanse series. Sci fi mystery/adventure featuring rebellion, revolution, and space battles. Easy reading, action packed novels that tend towards being page-turners.
