I have a preschooler and this is what I’d say about reading with a baby – be flexible with what you think your preferences are! I almost never did audiobooks before giving birth, now I almost exclusively do audio. That started during late night rocking/nursing sessions when I wanted something hands free plus I could rest my eyes a little while it played. Now I like it because I can multitask with crafting and make the most of my free time.
Before, fantasy and science fiction were my go-to genres, but in the first few months I did exclusively rom-coms. For me, I wanted something with a relatively straightforward plot, light-headed, happy endings, easy to follow even if I dozed off for a few minutes.
The Crazy Rich Asians trilogy was one I really liked that I listened to in the first few months. The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams is a hilarious rom-coms series. For fantasy, the audio of House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune is fantastic. For nonfiction, I love Destiny of the Republic and River of Doubt, both by Candice Millard. The Fireman by Joe Hill is kind of fantasy/thriller but he’s predominantly a horror author so it has those suspense vibes.
