I began reading this book without many expectations. Sure, the reviews on Goodreads are glowing, but the platform has recently turned into a bit of a cesspool for BookTok hype, so I decided to take those reviews with a pinch of salt.
My god. I’m now 70% through, and I can confidently say this is shaping up to be one of the best books I’ve ever read. It’s filled with so much heart, so many emotions. The author’s ability to make you care deeply about the characters (even though some of them are absolute jerks) is nothing short of brilliant. John Boyne, take a bow.
I have no idea how this book will end, but I’m certain it’s going to rip my heart out, stomp on it a few times, and then piece it back together with all its cracks and crevices—and strangely, I’m okay with that.
