I'm in a reading slump and nothing seems to keep my interest lately.
My only requirement is that the book made you feel smarter or just generally made you think interesting thoughts lol. But heavy on the 'hooked on page one' and 'couldn't put it down' vibes.
I'm purposefully being vague because I'm open to anything and want a wide variety.
Thanks 🙂

I read a book called Legacy. The author was Susan Kay, it was a very good historical fiction about Elizabeth I. She also authored another favorite book of mine called Phantom. Couldn’t put either down. She wrote very well. Don’t know what your tastes are but both books are page turners.
I’m reading the count of monte cristo right now and it’s superb
Frankenstein
To Kill a Mockingbird was required reading in my high school, but none the less, I was captivated by it from the get go. As far as it making you feel smarter/interesting thoughts, Atticus Finch’s character and ability to maintain moral integrity and justice in the face of extreme prejudice is not only inspiring, but a great social commentary that really makes you wonder how incredibly cruel the world was and continues to be.
Harper Lee wrote an instant classic, and if you haven’t already read it, it’s a definite must!
Rebecca
Madame Bovary
Journey to the Center of The Earth by Jules Verne. It’s such an engaging book and makes you think as well.
A Room With View! It’s so funny. Also ,weirdly, The Scarlet Letter. I was surprised by how into it I was.
Laughter in the Dark by Nabokov. Unputdowntable, quick and engaging read that’s not so overly complex. Darkly humourous. I see it as an alternate reality of Lolita where she’s older and turns the tables on her groomer.
Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan. Poetically written and transported me to the South of France. The main character is devious, immoral, and petulant, but it was a thrill to be in her head and even more so when I realized the author wrote this when she was 18. I wish I read this during the summer.
Never let me go by kazuo ishiguro!! Not really a classic (yet) 🙃 he’s a phenomenal writer and his story’s are kind of bizarre but they really rope you in
Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. The writing was not at all what I expected, because I had never read Steinbeck and expected a dense classic novel style, but I was immediately hooked and loved the book. It doesn’t come across as a very intellectual book, but I think it’s the type of book that can inspire a lot of philosophical thought and make you think deeply about what it means to be human and what kind of human you want to be.
Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux.
11/22/63 by Stephen King
The Female Man by Joanna Russ
Pride and Prejudice
Little Dorrit. To me, it was romantic.
The Idiot
Emma
master and commander Patrick Obrian
East of Eden. Totally unexpected since it ain’t my cup of tea. The book was just so beautiful
