Immersive descriptions of deserts, wastelands, ruins, destroyed villages and similar in fiction and non-fiction books!

I'm just looking for a realistic experience that will make me feel like I'm actually there.

Bonus points if there are also descriptions of remnants of civilization in a desolated space (ex. a rust-colored can of Coke half buried in the sand, etc).
