When I say underrated, I just mean something that's not typically talked about as much as the more popular stories, like Dragonriders of Pern, Fourth Wing, LOTR, or Eragon. I'm on a dragon kick and want to check out some that aren't as well-known. For reference, some I've really enjoyed:

    Temeraire by Naomi Novik

    Dragon Mage by ML Spencer

Dragons of Umbra series by Emma Hamm

    Ezaara by Eileen Mueller

    Dragonrider Chronicles by Nicole Conway

    1. The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley! YA classic about a princess who becomes a dragon slayer.

    2. Here are some that I’ve enjoyed. Older offerings though. Neither of them rarely see any mention in Reddit. Too bad, cause they are great stories.

Bazil Broketail series by Christopher Rowley

      Dragonmaster Series by Chris Bunch

      *Dragonworld* by Byron Preiss

*Tea With the Black Dragon* by R.A. MacAvoy – not your usual dragon story, a little dated (80s retro) but fun read

    4. Silk and Steel – Ariana Nash. Romance between a dragon prince and an elven assassin. It’s a bit trashy, but enjoyable. Lots of cool’s dragon lore and such

    5. Dragonfall by L.R. Lam! The worldbuilding can be just a tad confusing, and there are chapters that use 2nd person POV, but damn, is it good. I believe the sequel is already out or coming out soon, too!

    6. Last Dragonslayer series by Jasper Fforde

      Joust series by Mercedes Lackey

Eon & Eona by Alison Goodman

    7. You haven’t mentioned the Earthsea series. I don’t know if it’s because it’s too obvious or because I’m old and nobody cares about Earthsea.

But either way, read the Earthsea books.

The rain wild chronicles by Robin Hobb.
Generally considered the weakest portion of her Realm of the elderlings books but they’re the most dragon focused. I’d recommend starting at the beginning.

My Fathers Dragon. Forget the author. Middle grade book and there are several in the series.

    10. YA, but the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C Wrede. Dealing with Dragons is the first. I read these as a kid and loved them, and reread one recently and it held up great. Lots of fun about dragon politics and dragon households and turning traditional fairytales on their heads.

    11. The Rage of Dragons by Evan winters is a really good series so far (2 books with 3rd coming). There are dragons in it, but they are still a mysterious force that we don’t understand yet, and all the foreshadowing suggests that the 3rd book will be solely based on them.

The Wings of Fire series by Tui T Sutherland is excellent, for all ages. I read it as an adult and loved it.

Lindsay Buroker’s Dragon Blood series doesn’t usually have actual dragons present, but you can see their influence everywhere in the world.

There’s also the Shadow of the Dragon duology by Kate O’Hearn, which I enjoyed as a teenager, and the Dragon Orb series by Mark Robson, but I’m not sure how well they’d hold up to me as an adult.

      Joust by Mercedes Lackey

It’s largely about taking care of the dragon, not dragon fighting action scenes and it’s beautiful. There’s a series too but the first one is my favorite

    14. E E Knight has a series I enjoyed in college about a dragon and its life. The first book is Dragon Champion.

    15. hhhnnnnnggggggg on

I liked the dragon series E E Knight wrote. Each book in the series is about a different dragon sibling from the same clutch.

A really weird book I don’t really recommend but was something is Touched by Venom.

    16. The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. The memoirs of a naturalist who has devoted her life to studying dragons.
