I really loved the whole complicated, mean, traumatised, funny and intimate entanglements in the Haunting of Hill House family. Intelligent, complex families, each with their private lives and pains and goals, but…I want books where it’s engaging, sexy and witty. Not just super sad or dramatic. I don’t know what kind of book that would be, but just one where I could get to know a family or friend group where people are struggling with their demons but with some humour.
Not super basic thrillers, preferably something well written or even literary, but most of all just engaging

I think people had mixed experiences with it, but I LOVED Long Island Compromise, which came out this year.
Other authors who tend to write books like what you’re looking for are Nathan Hill and Jonathan Franzen, although their books do tend to feature a fair bit of heaviness/sadness.
All these books I’m describing are super long, though, so if that’s not your style disregard. I’ve found that complex family dramas do tend to run on the long side.
