Recommend me a book! My author friend, Emily Varga, challenged me years ago to make sure a minimum of 1/5 books I read was written by a BIPOC. The only New Year's resolution I have ever kept.
Recently got VERY drawn into T. Kingfisher (Nettle and Bone, Bryony and Roses, and the first two Saints of Steel). 4 books up and I have to take a brief break to discover another fun world.
If I hadn't already gone through all the Sherry Thomas Lady Sherlock series I probably would go back to that.
I love fantasy with good world building (Brandon Sanderson Wind and Truth is my Christmas break plan), but AM SOOOOOOO loaded down at work right now I can't take on anything big (12+ hour days at the office with a little reading to knock me out).
This year I have really enjoyed:
– T. Kingfisher
– Stormlight Archive
– Sherry Thomas Lady Sherlock
– Alice Network, Kate Quinn
– Honjin Murders, Seishi Yokomizo
– Daevabad Trilogy, S. A. Chakraborty
– Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies, Alison Goodman
– Winter Sea, Susanna Kearsley
– Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Gabrielle Zevin
– Sea of Tranquility, Emily St. John Mandel
– Marrow Thieves, Cherie Dimaline
– Yellowface, RF Kuang
Meh for me:
– Left handed booksellers of London, Garth Nix
– Parable of the Sower, Octavia Butler
– Hollow Kingdom, Kira Jane Buxton
– Shadowy Horses, Susanna Kearsley
– Wild Houses, Colin Barrett
– Aeronaut's Windlass, Jim Butcher
– Our Share of Night, Mariana Enriquez
– These Woven Threads, Tahereh Mafi
Hated
– A Discovery of Witches, Deborah Harkness
Please rec a fun, lighthearted adventure romp by a BIPOC author 🙂
