Authority by Jeff Vandermeer. It is book 2 in a trilogy and I would recommend reading book 1 first (Annihilation). Annihilation isn’t as obviously an unraveling story to me but it is about a scientific mission to a very odd environment, and the mission doesn’t exactly go very well so it’s a bit of an unraveling.
