She says that is her favorite book she has ever read and she is a ridiculously avid reader. I asked her what it was that she liked so much and she said strong female protagonist, Historical/happened in the past. and romance.

Anne of Green Gables. All eight books are amazing. They’re historical, happened in the past, Anne is a great character, and she also gets herself in trouble constantly so she’s relatable.

    2. Wolves of Willoughby Chase is a good one, it’s a series too (although the first is the best in my personal opinion). No romance though. In all honesty, I can think of many that fit this other than the romance. Maybe Little Women? Also the Tiffany Aching series, although romance really only comes towards the end. The ballet shoes/theater shoes/acting shoes series is fantastic, although perhaps a bit young for her and romanceless, although incredibly appleaing to most girly girls I know. The Little Princess also has no romance but I can’t possibly not recommend it to a girl who wants historical fiction with strong female characters. Going to close this with suggesting checking out The Secret Garden if she hasn’t already read it (although the romantic notes are very much the air of a childhood crush rather then any characters saying they like each other). Good luck!

No romance, but otherwise Quest for a Maid by Frances Mary Hendry is a great book that fits the bill.

Has she also read Calico Captive?

Maybe Laurie Halse Anderson’s Seeds of America trilogy: Chains, Forge, and Ashes

The Sky is Falling trilogy by Kit Pearson.
Anything by Ruta Sepetys and Stacy Lee and Monica Hesse.
      Little Women.

The Ramsay Scallop by Frances Temple. The Midwife’s Apprentice by Karen Cushman. Maybe Jackaroo by Cynthia Voigt. Juniper by Monica Furlong. Semi-historical-ish, interesting young women as main characters, some of them have a little romance.

    7. Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Paterson (I read that and Witch of Blackbird Pond in 4th grade, loved them both)
