I’m currently reading The Policymaking Process by Charles E. Lindblom and Edward Woodhouse, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s a straightforward read that’s helping me catch up on political concepts in a clear and engaging way. I’m debating whether to reread it while taking detailed notes and doing some independent research or to read something similar to absorb the material from a different angle.

For context, I’ve also read all of Robert Caro’s books on LBJ and am currently working through The Power Broker. I find national politics fascinating, but I’d like to shift my focus to something more local.

I’m particularly interested in how local politicians rise to power; how do they get into office? What do they need to learn along the way? What are they studying, and what should I study if I wanted to understand (or even pursue) a role in local government? Essentially, I want to understand the structure of politics at the municipal and state levels—how it actually works beyond just theory. I'm struggling to find a good book that talks about local politics. Bonus if it's a text book. I love a good college level text book read.

So, what books do you reccomend on these topics?
