I’m wondering if anyone has a good suspense/ horror mystery that takes place in a small town. I can’t quite find the right words to describe this so hopefully you’re picking up what I’m putting down; the main character goes to a small town where they investigate a murder or something and no one in the town can be trusted.
Not looking for a particular book, just something that falls into or around that category.

Can you sub a monastery for a small town?
If so, you might be looking for The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. You might also be looking for Dissolution by CJ Sansom (which nods to Eco’s work in a lot of ways).
I will also throw out My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones and Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle if you want more supernatural elements in your small town murder mystery.
