I am looking for some spring/summer reads. I try to read books that match the season/temperature. Last summer I read Kafka by the Shore by Haruki Murakami, and it fit the vibe perfectly.
I love Murakami and have read Killing Commendatore, Kafka by the Shore, and Wind up Bird. I read Earthlings by Sayaka Murata, and I liked the surrealist vibes but it was a lil too weird for me (iykyk).
I’m not exclusive to Japanese authors; they just do the genre well (also I love cats). I also read a bunch of fantasy short stories last year and really enjoyed Kelly Link’s Wizards of Perfil. Kind of a Howl’s Moving Castle-esque magical realism.
Anyway, whimsy and/or weirdness is what I’m looking for, preferably summer/spring in tone.

I just read Black Woods Blue Sky that has magical realism and a big chunk takes place in the summer (particularly notable because it’s set in Alaska). It skews more dark than whimsical so I’m not sure if it fits the vibe you seek but I really enjoyed it.
