I recently read 'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead' by Olga Tokarczuk and loved it. I realized I rarely read books with older female protagonists and I would very much like to read more. Suggest me a book with an older female protagonist that is not romance focused. Bonus points for female authors. To clarify my interests, I often choose classics over contemporary literature but I'm not opposed to it of course if it is well written. I read more male authors than female, mostly because I'm not interested in romance novels and men do tend to write with more freedom. I find myself recently wanting to read more female authors, there are just fewer options that fall under my scope of interest. Carson McCullers is a prime example of the kind of female authors I enjoy reading. I like weird and intelligent literature. Im open to all suggestions though and am not at all married to my opinions on these things. Very open minded and curious to see your suggestions. Also, I am 49 if that matters at all. Thank you!

“Olive Kitteridge” by Elizabeth Strout
I loved that book. The same author has a few others I haven’t gotten to yet, Flights and the Empusium you could try.
I very much enjoyed the Wall by Marlen Haushoffer
Women Talking (and others by Miriam Toews usually have a range of ages)
