Ideally the book’s sole purpose is to improve your reading speed & comprehension.

I don’t really think that’s a thing. People read at different speeds, just like they do everything else at different speeds.

      Be careful.

Most reading speed improvement books are a sham. “Speed reading” has been widely debunked, and the common consensus is that if you want to improve reading speed without losing any of the content, you just have to practice by reading.

As for reading comprehension, I recommend How To Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster. It is a handy primer for literary analysis, themes, and finding patterns within and across texts.

For better comprehension you really just need to read with increasing frequency and diversity. I would suggest reading news articles, email newsletters, magazines and always a novel as well as podcasts. If you have the fundamentals down, then exposure to a variety of topics and subjects broadly will help. I also reccomend something with some depth, a historical text about a single topic allows you to see what a deep dive looks like in a particular area.

I’d suggest reading a thriller or mystery.

I’ve been reading Diane Hoh for her thriller mysteries. We have to collect evidence and understand what the author’s clues could be.

There’s this company called Remedia Publications. They have a lot of learning items. I love their reading products for comprehension. Short stories help focus on understanding and comprehension. they have a lot of worksheets that can help, guide into understanding.

Repeated reading is correlated with better fluency, so I would find something you enjoy reading that is slightly challenging and go back to it periodically.

I think it’s just practice. I read early for reasons I won’t go into, long story. Never stopped. It’s not a good thing really, never found a use for it. And I am always out of books as a result. I can read a book a day without trying. Not small short ones either.

Sure there are a lot of books around, I’ve read a lot of them. Culling the genres I don’t like, still leaves me constantly hunting for new….(I am old now so old ones, mostly I have read them).

Once or twice, reading through legal docs, it came in handy…with limited time, lol…but other than that, why??

And once you do, you can’t not do it. Partner used to say, read slower…but when you try you’re just rereading or stalling. Once involved in the tale again, back to normal….
