Looking for a book (or books) from the POV of a male protagonist who is narcissistic or at least very selfish/solipsistic. It's not that he doesn't understand others' emotions/feelings, but he usually has no regard for them and only sees them as a puppet for his own ends.
This male character starts to care/fall for another person, but for the longest time, he convinces himself that he's keeping him/her around for entirely selfish reasons and once their 'usefulness' is over, he will discard them without a thought.
Even though he's extremely selfish and comes with a huge ego, this man/boy is essentially lonely and needs validation and emotional support more than he'd like to admit.
