My favourite books include:
Osamu Dazai – No Longer Human (semi-autobiographical, very psychologically challenging)
Cormac McCarthy – Blood Meridian (western, non-traditional horror with extreme violence)
Elie Wiesel – Night (Holocaust survivor’s autobiography)
Terry Pratchett – The Colour of Magic (fantasy/comedy)
Emmanuel Carrère – The Moustache (mix of drama, psychological horror, romance, and overall pretty absurd writing)
John Steinbeck – Of Mice and Men (tearjerker)
All pretty short books as well!
Moby Dick is one of my favorites but it is not for everyone as it is about 200 hundred pages of a doomed whaling expedition and the thrill of the hunt and 400 pages of Whale facts mixed with how said whale facts can apply to the greater human condition.
