Looking for something similar to the Master and Commander series
My dad was OBSESSED with this series. I’m doing my holiday shopping and hoping to get him lots of books! He also loves civil war/WW1-2 stories. He’s already read The Wager.
Some of Bernard Cornwell’s series (eg. Sharpe) may interest him but hard to find many at O’Brian’s level.

The Bob Lee Swagger series by Steven Hunter is worth a look. Vietnam era but lots of detail about weapons and geography. Good sense of humor, too.

My dad is also very into this series, and he LOVED [Doctor Dogbody’s Leg](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17785.Doctor_Dogbody_s_Leg). It’s by one of the authors of the Mutiny on the Bounty books (also good, by the way), about a naval surgeon from the Napoleonic wars who tells these increasingly outrageous stories about how he lost his leg, always a different story every time. It’s not the easiest to find a new copy, though there are generally some used ones available, but it’s a really fun book.

I just heard from someone on this sub earlier this week that there is a dictionary specifically for all the nautical words in the Master and Commander series. Maybe a nice gift, if he doesn’t already have it?
