My mom used to be an avid reader. She loved authors like Stephen King and Sue Grafton. She fell out of reading sometime in the chaos of raising kids. Switched to TV. She enjoys shows like CSI and Criminal Minds. Outside of crime stuff, her tastes are a little hard to predict. She liked GOT (tv, don’t think she’s ever read fantasy), greys anatomy, virgin river, but dislikes a lot of popular shows (severance, breaking bad, silo). She also likes horror.

A few years ago my dad passed away, and she’s been fairly isolated since. I’d love to reinvigorate her love for reading this Christmas to help keep her mind active. I just had my first baby and my plan is to give everyone a book to read on Christmas Eve as a tradition. Since she’ll be here, I want to get her one so she can participate too.

I’m more of a Reese witherspooon book club basic bitch, so I’m really at a loss here as our tastes are so different. Any recs would be greatly appreciated!!

    1. If she likes Criminal Minds and CSI, she might like books by authors like Karin Slaughter, Karen Rose, Beverley Barton, Lisa Gardener. They’re all crime fiction writers that my mum likes.
Or maybe she might like Liane Moriarty books which fit a bit more with Virgin River vibes.

    2. There was a line of CSI novels published between 2001-2011. Not the best mysteries out there, but even as someone who only watched a handful of episodes, I did enjoy the three or four in the series that I’ve come across. She might enjoy them! They’re out of print, but most used book sites have them (plus they are available still as ebooks from places where fine ebooks are sold).

Maybe a classic mystery? Murder on the Orient Express or The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie? Easy and cozy.
