I'm looking for novels where real historical painters, or fictional painters in a very real-feeling art world, are the main focus.
Some I've enjoyed include The Agony and the Ecstasy (Michelangelo) and The Girl with a Pearl Earring (Vermeer). I'm open to any era, from the Renaissance to modern art scenes.
Can anyone recommend other compelling novels centered on the life of a painter or the intense, competitive world of creating art?
