I’m looking for a book where the MC (or other prominent character) has worked through past suffering but what they went through ends up being useful in some way to the current plot. I’m most interested in SciFi/Fantasy but any fiction will do. Thanks!

The Curse of Chalion by Lois Macmaster Bujold has this as an important part of the plot.
