    Hi All!

I am in a book club and we decided to do a secret santa for the holiday season. Each person was allowed to share three adjectives that describe a book they would enjoy. The person I got described their ideal book as "wintery, witchy, and folkloric." Upon a quick Google search, I discovered the Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden; however, some sources say that this is more of a YA series. For reference, the person I got is a 28-year-old man. Does anyone know if the Winternight Trilogy would be enjoyable for him and/or know of any other books that match this description?

I don’t know about that series but he might like Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, very wintery

    2. I wouldn’t say that Winternight is YA. The main character is young but the content and writing are mature.

      Winter Rose by Patricia McKillip

    3. I loved that series and I’m usually not a YA fan. It fits his description really well! I would also recommend Krampus: The Yule Lord by Brom if he’s okay with some horror.

    4. The Witch Hunter – Max Seeck

Hits 100% of your ask. Norwegian book set in modern Norway, follows a female police officer as she uncovers a contemporary coven of murdering witches during the Norwegian winter.

I read the first chapter last winter at night during a snowfall, then decided to take my dog for a walk. I kept hearing the echo of crunching snow and after 2 blocks turned around and had to go home. I was terrified.

      Also, I’m a 37 year old man.

    5. This is the exact series I thought of based on those three words. It’s perfect.

While a high school freshman who enjoys reading would enjoy this series, I wouldn’t call it young adult. In other words, it’s not at all immature, but it’s at the same time appropriate for a young adult reader.

My only reservation is that these three adjectives were inspired by this series and the intended recipient is looking to scratch the itch this series provoked.

If that’s the case, I can imagine that person also really enjoying The Once and Future Witches by Alix E Harrow.

Edit: since your recipient is male, I thought I’d say that I’m a straight dude and I loved all three books of the winternight trilogy. I still often think about them.
