Sorry for the long and in depth post! I appreciate all who read and can help recommend something!
I am starting to get back into reading. I have so far finished three books: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Poppy Wars and tonight I finished To Sleep In a Sea of Stars.
It took me about a year to finish the first mentioned book. I enjoyed it but, but I did get bored at times. I enjoyed the characters and the story but I felt a lot of the book was boring filler. (Really, why have entire pages dedicated to listing off the scientific names of marine animals?)
I read Poppy War and that took me about 4 months. It wasn’t boring, but it didn’t capture my attention. It didn’t have the suspense and mystery that usually keeps my attention. I didn’t feel any connection to the characters. The only thing that has actually stood out and stuck in my brain, was the page of vile war crimes that I feel were just added for shock factor, considering the rest of the book was rather tame. It added absolutely nothing to the story.. and I felt it didn’t fuel the fire of the protagonists goal.. as she was already off her rocker. But whatever.
I just finished To Sleep In a Sea of Stars. It took me three weeks to finish, I held off on finishing it because I didn’t want it to end… now that I have finished it, i feel this sad empty feeling lmao.
I think the ending to the book was appropriate and satisfying, but I can’t help but wish there was more action between the protagonist and her love interest. It didn’t develop as much as I wanted, but I don’t think I would enjoy romance books.
I’m hoping I can find a happy medium to the seriousness of this book and still get to blush and giggle at the characters’ romantic connections as if I were flirting with a school crush.
Books I recall throughly enjoying in the past were the Jack Reacher books, albeit that was in middle school, and I’m now nearing my late 20s. Not sure if I’d still enjoy them or enjoy books similar but it’s worth a shot!

As the regional R.F. Kuang enthusiast, maybe try other novels written by her? Especially Yellowface, as it’s not an immersive high fantasy. It’s more light hearted and definitely comedic while also discussing important topics and morality of the main character (which, there is none)
