Malibu Burning (and series) by Lee Goldberg
Your title ‘Old Man’ reminded me of ‘Old Man’s War’ by John Scalzi. Seeing that he likes Paul Murray and Michael Grant it might be a good one for him.
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. Gothic mystery. Well-crafted plot.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Set during WWII, narrated by Death. Sounds grim but is eally moving and beautifully written
Would your dad like Ernest Hemingway? I’d recommend A Farewell To Arms, Death In The Afternoon or For Whom The Bell Tolls in terms of Hemingway. The Old Man And The Sea would also be a pretty good starting point for Hemingway because it’s not that long.
Empire Falls by Richard Russo
