I'm looking for something that depicts the distance that can be found between people, the feeling of trying to reach out across a great distance and then pulling back at the last moment out of fear that the other person would not reciprocate, or that words would not be enough. The dynamic of carefully stepping around uncomfortable questions, the space taken up by things left unsaid, a sense of repression that builds over time, etc.

Would like books exploring this dynamic in different types of relationships, including but not limited to romantic ones. Preferably not a book focusing on a divorce, however.

Books I've read that I think fit this criteria include Skylark by Dezső Kosztolányi and The Return of the Solider by Rebecca West.
