Hi all! The things I liked most about Burning Butch were:
- Queer identity, specifically butch lesbian or nonbinary
- Reconciling faith sexuality (Mertz grew up Catholic like I did, we're both queer)
If y'all have books along those lines I would love suggestions!

Lmao this is absolutely not what you’re looking for, but if you like fantasy, Metal From Heaven by August Clarke is FULL of butches and a fantasy religion with gendered demands of its followers that the protagonist has to reconcile with. I have never read a book with so many butch characters in my life. Was a lot of fun.
Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H. if you want nonfiction.
Girl Mans Up by M.E. Girard if you like YA fiction. Very butch centric. The main character isn’t super religious, but she goes to a Catholic school and her family is religious.
I second Metal From Heaven by August Clarke if you’re down for prose-y fantasy with its own made up queer subcultures and the main character practicing a queered version of the fantasy religious system.
