I’m writing a murder mystery, what are some of the best books to learn the genre?

I'm not a very avid reader, but because I'm trying to add something to the genre of mystery, I feel it would be doing a disservice to not experience it myself. What are the best books with strong plots and characters so I can learn? I don't mean a how-to book, just some really good writing. Thanks!
