Favorite genres: mystery, magical realism, surrealism, dark academia, thriller, horror. I dabble in pretty much every genre though. I’m a big manga fan but I’m looking for a novel.
If you're familiar with the viral "read your color" quiz from several months back, I'm very strongly a purple reader.
Some of my favorite elements in books:
– multi POV/plot/timeline (ex: station eleven)
– non-traditional formatting/mixed-media (ex: house of leaves)
– lately I've been really liking Japanese stories (ex: strange houses, strange pictures)
– death games or other types of competitions (ex: Liar game manga series)
– a romantic subplot is often a nice extra X factor to make me love a book even more but not a necessity. Bonus points if it's a queer romance.
Some of my favorite books not listed above: If We Were Villains, The Starless Sea, And Then There Were None, Death Note, The Diviners series, 20th Century Boys, The Secret History. I'm a big fan of Agatha Christie & Haruki Murakami but not looking to read anything by them atm.
Hit me with your best shot bc I haven't had a 5 star read in ages so I'm dying for a novel that knocks it out the park.

lol I read the first part and was like… IF WE WERE VILLAINS and it’s the first damn book you have. Some ideas:
Piranesi (obligatory on this sub but actually it fits super well with what you’ve described)
Blood Over Bright Haven (fantastic standalone fantasy that has dark academia vibes and a mystery driving the plot)
Sea of Tranquility (I also loved Station Eleven and I think this is by far her best other book, excellent)
