There have been some movies about what living in Shanghai was like during European and Japanese occupation (WW2), but have there been any stand out books? I’m curious what life was like, how did Chinese people live and think during that time?
I was hoping for something like the sympathizer but a non-fiction would be fine too if there were portrayals of every day life rather than military /political theater.
Thank you!!

*Empire of the Sun*, by J. G. Ballard, is about a British boy living in Shanghai. Based in part on the author’s own experiences
Diana Chang’s *The Frontiers of Love* is a novel about the occupation from the perspective of the Eurasian bourgeoisie.
