    1. The First Law is dark, but not any darker than Game of Thrones, and actually has a lot *less* SA, among other things.

It’s also very funny a lot of the time, filled with lots of cynical wit/dark humor/sarcastic takes on life, the human condition etc. It’s a very character-driven series, and the first book just drops you right in with a few various characters doing their own thing, trying to survive their various lives, but just trust that the ‘overarching plot’ will come together in a big way as the series progresses, and it’s a lot of fun getting to know all these highly-flawed-yet-somehow-lovable bastards. Amazing audiobooks too, narrated by Steven Pacey. It has its heavy hitting, serious, even sad, moments, but doesn’t linger there too long imo, and is constantly gripping throughout.

    2. If you enjoyed *Game of Thrones* for its politics and sharp characters, *The First Law* might click but it’s darker, more cynical, and humorously brutal. If bleak worlds drain you, it may be a tougher fit.
