I am looking for a good suggestion for my book club! We have a limitation of 400 pages maximum, ideally less than 300 pages. The book should be thought provoking and easy to talk about for an hour, but relatively accessible to general audiences and ideally pretty entertaining.

The group is not very interested nonfiction, but other genres are good.

In the past, books like Piranesi, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and The City in Glass (Nghi Vo) did well with the group. Old Man’s War and The Left Hand of Darkness were less well-received.

Childhood’s End by Arthur C Clarke. This one is very philosophical and dives into themes that are great for discussion as most people will find different things in this book that are intriguing and thought provoking.

The Tortoise’s Tale by Kendra Coulter. It is told from the perspective of a tortoise in captivity and how she perceives and interacts with the world/people/animals around her. It’s beautifully written and has lots of elements that could lead to really good discussion.

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson Mcullers. I read it recently and enjoyed it quite a bit. It shares a lot of similar themes with To Kill a Mockingbird
