I’m doing a project called National History Day next year and I want to find some good topics and interesting history behind it. What books have a lot of inventions, history, and is modern times?
Are you looking for fiction set in modern times? Historical fiction? Nonfiction? I’m not sure what exactly is being requested.

The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World, by Virginia Postrel. Covers not only how textiles came to be, but also things like how dyeing fabric and the development of synthetic dyes was the basis for most of modern chemistry.
Women’s Work: The First 20,000 Years, by Elizabeth Wayland Barber. Another well regarded work on textile history
Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat, by Bee Wilson
