I used to LOVE reading as a kid, I probably went through the Harry Potter series 50+ times in the span of 2 years. Recently I have gotten back into reading after reading about 1 book per year (life gets busier the older you are 😔) and I realized that I just can’t process a single word I read. I know I’m reading words but the second I read the next word I forget what the last word said. I could finish a whole chapter but have barely a clue on what happened. I feel really stupid and I know I will get it back in a while but does anyone have any ideas on how I can help myself more? I feel like I can read Harry Potter and nothing else.

    1. What are you trying to read?

There are all kinds of things to read – graphic novels, long books, easy books, short stories. If you are struggling to literally remember one word to the next, do you think this is a medical issue or do you think it is a focus issue? Too many things on your mind?

    2. Sounds like you’re either too tired when you get around to reading.
Or you’re trying to read too fast, not letting things form in your mind.

You got older and live is more hectic, take your time, don’t expect to finish a book at the speed you used to.

Have you tried reading aloud to yourself? That helps me if I find that I’m skimming and not retaining anything.

You might also try audiobooks, which absolutely count as reading.

Also, this probably sounds obvious, but make sure you’re choosing books that you’re likely to enjoy! Sometimes I’ve found that people try to get back into reading by starting with self-help or something and those books are hard to enjoy.

If you loved Harry Potter, other fantasy books would be a good place to start!

    4. This may sound like a stupid question, but I assure you it isn’t. Is there a chance you might have gotten Covid and it gave you brain fog?
