This is my first time in this sub!

I’m traveling to the UK for the first time this year. I am not normally a history or nonfiction enthusiast, but after watching the movie the Darkest Hour, I was thinking Churchill’s life would be a great place to start and be good context for the trip. I want to know more about his life and maybe glean a better understanding of England during the war at the same time. I know he had a prolific life/career and it’s laughable to try and put it in a single volume, but I’d like a single volume book if possible just to cover a lot of the highlights.

I’m an avid reader, but usually stay within fiction, fantasy, and romance genres. Having said that, if you have recommendations that are really “readable” (for lack of a better word) that aren’t daunting, I’d love some recommendations. I don’t want it to feel too much like a textbook or reference material. Page count doesn’t scare me away as much as a story with no seasoning.

    1. Andrew Roberts’ “Churchill: Walking with Destiny” is exactly what you’re looking for – it’s comprehensive but reads like a novel, and Roberts has access to tons of previously unseen material. The guy makes Churchill’s whole wild life story feel like you’re reading about a fascinating character rather than trudging through dry historical facts

Andrew robert’s walking with destiny is excellent or if you want a big read there’s a series by william manchester called the ‘The last lion series’ which is excellent but extends across multiple volumes
