Hey everyone,
I’m 20, and I’ve basically gone my whole life only reading what was forced on me in school. I’ve never actually picked up a book because I wanted to. Lately, I’ve been really wanting to get into it, but I’m honestly overwhelmed with where to start.
Everyone keeps telling me to read self-help stuff, but that doesn't really pique my interest. I want fiction. I have this feeling that there’s a story out there that’s gonna absolutely blow my mind and keep me up at night, I just don't know how to find it.
Tho my biggest fear is picking up some massive book that looks like a dictionary, getting bored, and just giving up on reading entirely. I need something that’s a relatively easy read, beginner-friendly, and not too long. I’m into stuff like Inception with big plot twists and high stakes or romcom that makes me giggle at 3 am. Tho im not really sure where to start
Has anyone else been in this boat? What’s a good "gateway" book for someone who isn't a reader but wants a story that'll leave me staring at the wall when I finish it?
Open to anything, thanks!

Dude you’re describing exactly how I felt before I got hooked on reading
For that mind-bending twist stuff try “Dark Matter” by Blake Crouch – it’s like Inception but in book form and super easy to get through. Also “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” hits different, not too long and has some wild reveals
Start with shorter stuff that grabs you by page 10 or you’ll definitely bail like you said
*Jurassic park* by Michael Crichton
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a funny sci fi, great absurd humor to it
Eye of Minds is by the guy who wrote Maze Runner, but I think it has a better twist to it. It deals with a lot about virtual reality and artificial intelligence as well as some themes regarding police and propaganda in later books od the series.
MurderBot Diaries is a funny sci fi series that’s popular right now. The books are super short so they’re easy to get into.
This Is How You Lose The Time War might be a bit more of a challenging read, but you might find it as cool and twisty as inception
