Hey everyone,
I’m in a phase where I don’t really want cliché romance or feel-good stories. I’m looking for novels that actually shift the way you see love, life, relationships, or even yourself — books that stay with you long after you finish them.
Something that explores:
love beyond just romance
loneliness, growth, meaning, choices
human connections, flaws, and reality
I’m okay with slow, heavy, emotional, or philosophical reads as long as they’re honest and impactful.
Books that made you pause, rethink things, or changed your outlook would mean a lot.
Any recommendations?
Thanks 🤍

You Should Be So Lucky by Cat Sebastian. It made me reframe dying, death and grieving.
See my [Life Changing/Changed Your Life](https://www.reddit.com/r/Recommend_A_Book/comments/18b3pdi/life_changingchanged_your_life/) list of Reddit recommendation threads (one post).
*Slapstick* by Kurt Vonnegut. It’s especially critical to read the foreword that he wrote before the actual novel starts, because it helps frame the rest of the book in such an oddly, but endearingly, compassionate light.
Bonus points that it’s a pretty short read. It DOES have its share of signature Vonnegut cynicism as well, but I think it’s well worth the read, funny, and its lighthearted weirdness keeps the mood high throughout basically the entire read.
Just finished Butcher’s Crossing by John Williams. I feel that would fit into your category of human connections, flaws, and reality.
As for growth, try The City Below by James Carroll
Another for connections is The Overstory by Richard Powers
h{{Replay by Ken Grimwood}}.
Even if you could do it over, you can’t fix everything
A Place for Us (tackles religion, what parents and children ‘owe’ each other, identity, and more)
For me, love beyond romance was exactly what *The Sunflower Protocol* by Andre Soares did for me.
Brilliant story and veryyyy underrated.
