Recently, one of my 11th grade English students told me he wants to improve his reading skills and asked for a list of books he might like. When I asked, he had no preferences on genre, but I’d love to give him a list with variety beyond my usual contemporary lit fic. Any suggestions?

Improve from what level? Like, is he already a strong reader and wants to tackle advanced texts, or is he behind a bit and wants to improve his vocabulary or fluency?

If it’s the latter, he might like *Everything is Tuberculosis.* It’s written very accessibly but it’s also engaging and informative, with lots of historical anecdotes.

    2. This is contemporary lit fic, but I read The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier & Clay in high school and it resonated at that time, at that age.

If you’re not picky about your definition of “book,” I’ll also suggest Watchmen. If you can get past the fact that it’s a graphic novel, the writing is solid and the story feels relevant these days…
