I am in the middle of too many series at the moment and I feel like it is becoming impossible to find a fantasy book that is good and standalone at the same time. I also love a strong fmc if possible. Please HELP!
Priory of the Orange Tree. There is a prequel, but it’s not necessary to understand the story.
T. Kingfisher also has quite a few stand alone fantasy books. Nettle and Bone is especially good.

*Greenteeth* by Molly O’Neill; Jenny Greenteeth, the monster in the pond, saves a witch from drowning. Found family.
*Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts* by Kate Racculia; amazing, emotionally complex mystery and scavenger hunt.
*Uprooted* by Naomi Novik; long, interesting tale of a girl taken by a dragon, but nothing is as it seems.
*The Briar Book of the Dead* by A. G. Slatter about the multigenerational Briar witch family, told from the point of view of one of 4 cousins, the only one without magic. I found out later it’s a sort of sequel to a novella, but I had no idea; works perfectly as a standalone.
The Lions of Al Rassan or Under Heaven by Kay. Both are fantastic!

To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Monoquill Blackgoose. Not quite a stand alone, but book two will be out later this month. It’s a satisfying story even if it hadn’t gotten a second book.

Sabriel by Garth Nix. There are sequels but Sabriel is completely self-contained.

*The Herbalist’s Apprentice* by Mabel Maplewood; sweet cozy mystery & light romance. Delightful.
