Hi y’all! I’m looking for books with feminist messages. I really enjoyed the ensemble cast of characters in The Change. Specifically, I loved how it focused on a group of middle-aged women who come from a wide range of backgrounds. I also thought the magical realism was fun.

I prefer genre fiction like fantasy, sci fi, and horror, but I always love a good mystery or an intriguing plot. I’m not a huge fan of romance-centered stories, but some romance on the side is fine. I usually gravitate towards books with really strong characters and unique prose.

I’m looking for something that doesn’t necessarily ignore the real-world problems that women face, but also doesn’t let these problems overwhelm the narrative. Mostly looking for something fun and positive to help get me out of a funk.

    1. It doesn’t have any magical realism, but The Book Club for Troublesome Women by Marie Bostwick might have the ensemble and feminism you’re looking for. It’s about a group of suburban housewives in the early 1960s who start a book club to discuss Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique, and how the book and the club changes their lives.

    2. Have you read When Women Were Dragons? I loved it!

Also, in case you’re not aware, Kirsten Miller recently released The Women of Wild Hill.

    3. Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Rayburn was fun. No magical realism but it’s about a group of retired women assassins. It has a follow up but I haven’t read it yet.
