I love reading chapter books to my boys before bed. The oldest is getting picky about what he will hang around and listen to so I need something a little more mature but not too much because 6 year old is still in the audience. Some of what we read recently:
Harry Potter books 1-3
Mr Poppers Penguins
Charlotte’s Web
Little House books
Magic Treehouse
Lion witch and the wardrobe
Super fudge
Trumpet of the Swan
All Roald Dahl
Boxcar Children

«more mature» books:
Howl’s Moving Castle
Adventures with Waffles + Lena, the Sea, and Me
———
my TOP 3 recommendations:
all the Moomin books
all the Paddington books
Winnie-the-Pooh
———
other classics:
The Wind in the Willows
The Tale of Peter Rabbit
Alice in the Wonderland (don’t forget the 2nd book)
The Little Prince (might be not for everyone)
———
Astrid Lindgren’s books:
Pippi Longstocking
Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter
Mio, My Son
The Children of Noisy Village
Emil of Lönneberga
Seacrow Island
*The Gammage Cup*
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles (first book is *Dealing With Dragons*)
*Journey to the River Sea*
– *Swallows and Amazons* by Arthur Ransome, for childhood whimsy. Four children have adventures on a lake, sailing to an island only to discover that there’s a rival crew about! In the end, they team up to battle the dreaded Captain Flint (AKA Uncle Jim)!
– The *Wings of Fire* series, by Tui T Sutherland. I discovered this series as an adult, and I love it. I would have loved it as a child, too. Plus, dragons.
There is one moment where one of the main characters is forced to kill in self-defence, but she really doesn’t have a choice. Using the Harry Potter books are a scale, I would put it around book 3.
Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.
