The English teacher sub was no help. i’m subbing for an eighth grade class— an elective that is a study of villains. Can anyone recommend some short stories fitting the title of this post? Not The Most Dangerous Game or any Poe. I’m sure you know reading stamina in this country is at an all-time low. Just having them read a short story as opposed to watching Disney movies, which is what they’ve been doing, is going to have them running to the guidance counselor to switch their elective

    1. Flannery O’Connor. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is such a masterpiece.

Also, I used to teach 8th grade English, and we’d always read “The Veldt” or “All Summer In a Day” by Ray Bradbury. My students always liked them both. My advice would be to go really broad with the definition of “villain.” The villain could be society, it could be an idea, it could be some sort of expectation … doesn’t have to necessarily be one person. That’ll broaden your choices.
