My husband recently got into reading (as an avid reader myself, this got me so excited for him!) He has read poetry & a nonfiction novella, and is now interested in trying fantasy novels. His main concern is that he has trouble staying focused for long periods of time & finds long novels to be daunting – Does anyone have some suggestions for short(ish) high fantasy novels? Ideally under/around 300 pages if possible. I’m primarily a lit-fic reader, so I’m a little out of my depth here.
For reference: he absolutely loves the LOTR movie trilogy, The Hobbit, and really enjoyed Game of Thrones tv series. I think he’s primarily looking for novels with epic battle scenes. Stand alone novels might be preferable to start, unless it’s a series with shorter books. So I’m calling on all you avid high fantasy readers out there to drop any of your favorites 🙂 Thanks in advance!

Try Penric’s Demon by Lois Macmaster Bujold. It’s the first of a series of novellas.
The witcher books aren’t very long
Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman. A 400 page banger! I know a little longer, but worth it.
