I’ve really enjoyed his Codex Alera series and I’m currently reading The Cinder series. I couldn’t get into the Dresden files but I’m looking for fantasy/adventure books similar to his other series.
I had a similar experience with Butcher – loved Codex Alera but Dresden just didn’t click for me either. You might want to check out Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series since it has that same kind of structured magic system and political intrigue that makes Codex Alera so engaging. The Powder Mage trilogy by Brian McClellan is another solid pick, especially if your drawn to the military fantasy elements. For something a bit more abstract, Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilogy has excellent character development and world-building, though it’s definitely more introspective than Butcher’s usual pace. The Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks might scratch that itch too – it’s got the magic system complexity with some really creative concepts around color-based magic.
