The Mage is about a royal family named Magic. Morgan Magic is a princess who ends up trapped in a vessel called The Black Book, tormented by something dark and demonic. Her brother Henry hides Morgan's existence because of the shame of how Morgan was trapped. Henry ultimately blames himself for what happened, but cannot bring himself to tell his two daughters, Serenity and Nanari. Nanari is the eldest and destined for the throne. Serenity is the curious daughter who loves history, paintings, and foreseer volumes. Because of Serenity’s curiosity and love for the unknown, she ends up revealing the great dark secret that Henry was hiding, but at the expense of her life and her kingdom. Upon revealing the truth, she opens The Black Book, which releases Morgan Magic, now The Mage, from her prison. The Mage seeks revenge for what happened to her, but the darkness within her craves something more: power. So, Nanari has to step up as a leader and be the new queen. Enduring loss, heartache, and a rampant villain on the loose, she has to place the weight of the crown on her shoulders. She also has to protect her kingdom from The Mage. There is a prophecy that foretells the future, a trauma that needs to be revealed, and the creation of a new world.

Oh man this sounds absolutely wild! I love when books dive deep into family trauma and how secrets can literally tear apart kingdoms. The whole concept of Morgan being trapped in The Black Book and coming back twisted by darkness hits different – reminds me of those fairy tale retellings that go dark but with actual consequences.

Serenity sounds like she’d be teh character I’d relate to most, being all curious about forbidden knowledge and accidentally unleashing hell because of it. That’s such a classic “curiosity killed the cat” scenario but on a kingdom-destroying scale. Really interested in how Ashley Torres-Garcia handles Nanari’s character development too since she’s basically getting thrown into the worst possible situation as a new ruler.

Definitely adding this to my tbr pile, sounds like it has all the political intrigue and dark magic elements I’m always hunting for in fantasy
