I guess that last bit is down to personal opinion. I often see posts on twitter where they show a page from a book they’re reading and there’s so much messed up with the page. Text is formatted in a way to leave empty patterns, boxes of text offset with the rest of the page, changes in font or text size. Repeating phrases feels like the most basic example, and one i would consider gimmicky, tho if compelling enough could exact the desired reaction. I'm open to any and every genre. I was just really interested in naturally coming across such a book and being surprised instead of actively looking for one

I mean, I think the biggest gauntlet in this “genre” and one you’ll get recommended a lot is House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski, it’s a meta/psychological horror novel that uses multiple narrators, journaling layouts, different fonts, drawings, scribbling, overlapping text, diagrams, everything. It’s a very time consuming and somewhat difficult read, but it’s precisely what you’re asking.
