I just finished watching Marty Supreme and I’m wondering if I can get the same enjoyment from a novel or work of fiction??

I really love the “person in crisis” storytelling of the Safdie brothers’ movies. Good Time, Uncut Gems, Marty Supreme.

I’d love to find an author that has a similar taste. Stories that have all kinds of surprising twists and turns, black comedy, drama, people in crisis, etc.

Safdie brothers always have these quirky, off color, quasi-sociopathic characters who find themselves in all kinds of shit. And the tension just keeps building and building.

Any books or authors you can recommend?

Chuck Palahniuk is probably your best bet – Fight Club obviously but also Choke and Survivor have that same chaotic energy with deeply flawed protagonists spiraling out of control

Elmore Leonard writes crime stuff that has similar pacing and those morally ambiguous characters who keep making terrible decisions. Get Shorty or Out of Sight might work

also check out Denis Johnson, Jesus’ Son has that raw desperate quality where everything just keeps getting worse in the most darkly funny ways possible
