I think for each country there are books that help an outsider to get a perspective of what's going on there, or how the society functions (not necessarily as a whole, some interesting bits that don't apply to all of the people in the country are awesome, too). Suggest me some books from your place! It doesn't have to be mega objective either, feel free to share from your personal point of view.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey for the USA. McMurphy is loud, brash, and iconoclastic. He is also pro-social in a way. I think he embodies the individualistic impulses along with a fearlessness that is decidedly American.
Runner-up: Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry also has a character who is the quintessential American: Augustus McCrae.
