I'm rereading some old favorites yet again, but those mostly take place elsewhere or a long time ago.
As cool as those looks into other places and time are . . . I really want something like that taking place somewhere familiar. Let me hear from something post Y2K.
Give me people living their lives; let me feel a place and a time by their actions. I don't mind some plot, or a focus on a person's experience (a minority or interactions between cultures) but mostly let me see their world. I'm after people being people, the everyday.
And please NO "I'm 87 and 50%+ of this whole book is about my youth in a bygone world". Older in the modern day is fine, but not spending tons of time in the past.
